We have so-called leaders in our country who are waiting for the correct "politically expedient" time to speak up and out against the occupation of Iraq. It is no sweat for our politicos to wait for the right time, because not one of them has a child in harm's way. I don't care if the politician is a Democrat or a Republican, this is not about politics. Being a strong leader to guide our country out of the quagmire and mistake of Iraq will require people of courage and determination to stand up and say: "I don't care if I win the next election, people are dying in Iraq every day and families are being decimated." We, as the 62% of Americans who want our troops to begin coming home, will follow such a leader down the difficult but oh-so-rewarding path of peace with justice.
When Cindy Sheehan wrote that paragraph, she had Sen. Hillary Clinton in mind - and in her crosshairs.
Yesterday in Brooklyn, Sheehan accused the Junior Senator from New York of being a political opportunist who "knows that the war is a lie but ... is waiting for the right time to say it." Ms Sheehan then issued a challenge to Senator Clinton, saying, "You say it or you are losing your job."
While I very much doubt Hillary will lose her Senate gig, I'm convinced Senator Kiss The DLC While Hugging The Middle Of The Road won't land that other job she covets by playing coy.
A spokesman for Sen. Clinton, while not commenting on Sheehan's remarks, said the senator, while voting to give President Bush the authority to go to war, has been very critical of the way he has chosen to use that authority. Whatever that means.
Of course, political spokesmen get paid big bucks to spin out weasely statements that sound like they're answering criticisms, but aren't.
Hillary should beware. Cindy Sheehan spent August making Bush look bad while he was busy playing cowboy at his Texas pig farm clearing brush and sneaking off to play golf and assume his other secret identity as Bike Guy.
It was endless bad press for the president that has only gotten worse since Hurricane Katrina destroyed an entire American city while Mr Bush continued to "recreate" himself.
Well now it's Hillary's turn to squirm as the country's best-known Gold Star mother scolds.
With the war permanently gone south in the opinion of the American public, it's long past due for Clinton - along with other leading Democrats - to find a spine and stop supporting the policy that became a war that became an occupation that became an insurgency that became a quagmire that we can't win.
Mrs. Clinton is nuts if she thinks she can become the next President of the United States while straddling the middle - hell, lady, the netroots will make sure you don't even make it to the nomination.
